It turned out that the original material of sampling can be identified with Google's AI assist function "Google Assistant".
Methods discovered by the sample identification community
According to sampling licensing platform Tracklib, the method was discovered by Discord's sample identification community "Sample Hunting," which finds sources for sampling from works by Mobb Deep, Nujabes, Madlib, and others.
Sample Hunting co-founder lobelia began identifying samples in 2016 using Google Assistant and Shazam. After that, he felt the possibility of using Google Assistant to identify samples when identifying samples used on Daft Punk's album "Discovery", especially "Face To Face" co-written with Todd Edwards.
Lobelia explains about this method, "At the end of 2021, I used Google Assistant to find The Doobie Brothers' South City Midnight Lady being used as a guitar sample for Face To Face, and at that time, I used this method. I thought it would become widely known," he said.
Detect sub-second samples, even chopped or time-stretched samples
Another Sample Hunting member, DJPasta, says he's found another way to identify samples using Google Assistant.
“I used software called Bluestacks to come up with a way to stream audio directly from my PC to Google Assistant. So I decided to try this method to detect a short sample like the Carrie Lucas lyric "Sometimes a Love Goes Wrong" (used in "Face To Face")."
According to DJPasta, the Google Assistant "can detect the source material even from sub-second samples, chopped samples, and time-stretched samples."
If you have a song that you are curious about the original story, why not try this method once?
